Christkindl City of Steyr
The romantic city of Steyr at the confluence becomes a Christkindlstadt every year in Advent.
The small district of Christkindl has always been the centre of Steyr’s Christmas events. The pilgrimage church was built 300 years ago on the site where the Steyr citizen Ferdinand Sertl placed a small wax figure in a tree hollow and retired to pray. Even today, many guests make a pilgrimage to the Wachsjesukind in the “Tree under the Sky” in Christkindl.
The world-famous Christkindl post office is located directly behind the Christkindlkirche in the Hotel-Restaurant Christkindlwirt. Every year, more than 1.7 million letters are stamped with special Christmas stamps and special stamps. Of course, the numerous wish letters from children from all over the world are also answered.
Starting from the place of pilgrimage, further Advent traditions arose such as nativity scenes with the typical nail smithy cribs, vintage bus rides, or steam train rides with the Steyr Valley Railway through Aulandschaften to Steinbach to the Advent Calendar Village. The 1st Austrian Christmas Museum is located in Steyr and houses the private collection Elfriede Kreuzberger with over 14,000 pieces of historical Christmas tree decorations. Housed in the former Bürgerspital, the museum is an attraction for young and old every year, especially because an adventure train over three floors gets you in the mood for Christmas.
Blacksmiths from the region let the open fire spark again in the Advnet and around Silverster and present their craft. Culinary delicacies and warming punch specialties at the idyllic Advent market and the Advent blowing from the town hall balcony on Steyr’s town square create an atmospheric atmosphere in the Christmas-decorated city, where the Steyrer Christkindl makes children’s eyes shine on advent weekends.
