Steyr
1,000 Years of History & Romance

Steyr with its 38,000 inhabitants is situated in the middle of Austria’s Romantic Road between Salzburg and Vienna. The town is a veritable architectural jewel: in the historic Stadtplatz Square, burgher houses dating back to various stylistic epochs stand harmoniously side by side. For more than six hundred years, the town‘s landmark, the Gothic Bummerlhaus, has always been right in the centre of this beautiful square. The mighty Lamberg Castle towers above, built on the foundations of the “Styraburg”, the castle to which the town owes its foundation in 980. The Enns and Steyr Rivers have influenced Steyr’s development and economy for centuries.

The rivers were used to transport iron and it was this iron trade and the crafts connected with it that made the people of Steyr wealthy and rich. Right outside the town lies the Kalkalpen National Park with beautiful beech forests that are listed UNESCO natural heritage sites. Whether hiking, cycling or mountain biking, stunning adventures in the great outdoors and breathtaking panoramic views await you. Indulge yourself with delicious Upper Austrian specialties in one of our many cosy cafés, inns or restaurants. Take a stroll through the town and feel the harmonious symbiosis between its past rich in tradition and the vibrant present brimming with life – lots of exciting discoveries are out there just waiting for you to find them!
